What is so Special About Antioxidant Creams
Everyday there seems to be a new catch phrase in the world of skin care products. We know, all too well, that skin care companies are constantly trying to use new words and ingredients to help sell their products, however, not all of the hype is true.
By all means, antioxidant skin care products have quickly become one of the newest catch phrases out there. But unlike most empty promises, this word does have some true meaning behind it.
The aging process, UV radiation, smoking and pollution can all lead to the production of free radicals. Free radicals are produced when a molecule is missing one electron or has an odd number of electrons. This doesn't seem like anything that could cause a negative effect on your skin until you discover that electrons exist in pairs and will steal electrons from other molecules in order to stabilize themselves.
This process starts a chain reaction which ends up damaging and destroying molecules. If enough cells are destroyed, the damage will start to show on your skin. This also means that your skin will gradually begin to deteriorate.
But what do antioxidants have to do with all this? Well, antioxidants are substances that sacrifice one of their electrons to neutralize the effect of free radicals. Antioxidants are usually derived from fruits and vegetables and may even be found in a antioxidant skin cream that is made with one or more of the following ingredients.
Vitamin A (carotenoids)
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Flavonoids or polyphenols
Vitamin A is often used to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and pigmentation problems. Vitamin C, on the other hand, has the ability to reduce age spots and combat the effects of smoking. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant that also has anti inflammatory properties.
The Sources of Vitamin A, C and E
Fruits and vegetables that are red, orange or yellow contain high levels of Vitamin A. Some of these foods include carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, squash, cantaloupes, peaches and apricots. You can also attain Vitamin A from broccoli, kale and collard greens.
Vitamin C is obtained from all kinds of citrus fruits. Big, leafy vegetables like spinach and lettuce are also good sources of Vitamin C. It can also be found in strawberries and tomatoes.
Rich sources of Vitamin E are nuts, seeds, and whole grains. You can also attain if from different oils such as vegetable oil and liver oil. Once again big, leafy vegetables also contain Vitamin E.
Where to Get Flavonoids and Polyphenols
You can obtain these substances from grapes, red wine, pomegranates, cranberries and any type of tea.
Keep in mind that an effective anti-aging routine will always include foods, but also, the use of topical products that contain antioxidants.
